As the cold blankets the city, the elegance of a fine-dining experience at Steenberg Wine Estate is a must, writes Amy Steenkamp.
Recently, we visited renowned contemporary restaurant, Tryn at Steenberg Wine Estate, for a tantalising tasting of their winter menu. Nestled in a quiet nook at the foot of the mountain, the ambiance itself promised an evening of sophistication and culinary delight…
Winter at Tryn, Steenberg Wine Estate
A for ambiance and atmosphere
With fairy lights lighting the vineyard paths on a crisp winter night, we were greeted by ambiance that blended modern elegance with a cosy South African winter charm. Soft lighting, tasteful modern art-deco style decor, and a welcoming atmosphere set the stage for an evening of culinary delight.
Softened with red wine and sparkling bubbles
Seated comfortably, the experience, softened with red wine and sparkling bubbles, started with warm mini mosbolletjie bread – an amuse bouche that tantalised the tastebuds. The oysters and shallot vinaigrette that followed were divine.
Tryn’s winter menu is a 3 course and à la carte, specially curated to showcase seasonal ingredients, promising a journey through flavour and texture that would delight the palate.
Sinking into starters
Starters arrived, presented like works of art. We opted for confit duck and pan fried scallops. Layers of flavour danced on the tongue, a testament to Tryn’s balance of simplicity and sophistication.
My word, the mains…
For mains, we sunk into a dish that pairs with winter perfectly. Glazed pork belly and flame grilled beef fillet. The pork belly, cooked to tender perfection with crispy skin, was complemented by the tangy sweetness of a reduction. Alongside, a medley of winter vegetables—roasted root vegetables and sautéed Brussels sprouts—added depth and earthiness to the dish. On dish presentation, Tryn knows how to deliver.
In the sweet details
No winter dinner is complete without a decadent dessert. We tucked into a velvety créme bruleé and Tryn’s signature cheesecake accompanied with an almond crumble, passionfruit ‘gel’ and raspberry ice cream. Tryn’s signature chocolate truffle followed, as the sweetest goodbye.
Stellar service
Our experience at Tryn was elevated by fantastic service that was attentive, yet unobtrusive. Each course was delivered at a leisurely pace, staff were well-familiar with the menu, and offered insights into the chef’s inspirations and recommendations for wine pairings.
The winter menu experience at Tryn is served at R580 per person, available daily from 12pm.
