What hairstyles can you suggest to get me away from my usual bob?
You don’t need to change your hairstyle completely. The bob is a classic hairstyle because it can be adapted to suit any face shape. It can also be updated easily with the clever use of layering around the face, the addition of a fringe and by changing the parting to create a completely different and new look.
What are the best ways to cover grey?
The best way to cover grey hair is with permanent hair colour. However, nowadays more women are choosing to embrace their grey hair. Women are now asking for advice on how to incorporate changes to their hair colour, rather than blanket covering grey hair.
What shades or tones are best for mature skin?
The most common mistake women over 45 make when changing their hair colour is to stick with tones and shades that they wore 20 years ago. As you mature your skin can lose its colour, so you need to choose shades with a warm undertone like reds and browns.
What kind of styles look trendy without looking too young for my age?
A hairstyle that complements your face shape, and makes you feel confident will keep your look modern. Your age doesn’t mean you can’t be on trend. Up-dos are very chic, and over 45s with longer hair should consider putting hair up on the head in a loose chignon. Or, why not consider cutting your hair in to a bob, it’s a timeless cut that is always in style.
What kind of small changes can I make as a pick me up, without having my hair drastically cut?
The key is to try something new and never to be afraid of experimenting, no matter how old you are. If your hair is long and you normally wear it down, try putting it up. If your hair is mid-length try setting it with heated rollers to create texture and movement. Short hair can be updated by altering the way you blow-dry your hair. Whether you’ve got short or long hair you can easily change your look by changing your parting, creating a wispy fringe, or simply by using rollers on the crown to add height.
What solutions are there for thinning hair?
As hair matures it becomes drier, thinner and less abundant, therefore lacks body and volume, so it is essential that you use products that have specifically been formulated for ageing hair. My other tip is to avoid over-drying your hair. In my experience over drying is one of the worst things you can do to thinning hair, so I’d recommend drying the hair naturally, and then styling the hair only when it’s slightly damp.
What do you recommend for sun dried and damaged hair?
I believe prevention is better than cure. If sun damage has already occurred, you can re-hydrate your hair by warming a little wheat germ oil, and working it through the hair before wrapping the hair in a towel for 20 minutes. Finish by washing with a gentle shampoo and conditioner like the ones by ProAge. Then rinse your hair with cold water to close the cuticles.
How can I keep the blow-dried style from the hairdressers?
The best way is with a good haircut. All good hairdressers will be trained to create cuts which will minimise the work you will have to do at home. It’s also much easier to style hair when it’s almost dry, as it will shape more easily, so make sure you take out at least 70% of the water before you start drying.
