Often, we start the New Year with big intentions to treat ourselves better. We pencil in our major life goals for the new year, throw in a new fitness routine, diet or lifestyle POA. These longterm goals are all good and dandy, but they’ll take some work before you see any results.
It’s important to start the year on a good note, so why not implement a few simple habits that you can achieve right away? Habits that aren’t mentally, emotionally or physically taxing, but still make a world of difference, and will set the mood for 2023 you. Let’s get into some suggestions:
Keep a carafe by your bedside
Staying hydrated is the easiest thing to make a habit of, and you can glam it up. Keep a gorgeous carafe next to your bedside to refill your water. You can even mix it up by adding edible flowers, slices of lemon, or cucumber. If you’re like me, you catch yourself stumbling across the house in the very early AM’s because you’ve polished off your glass of bedside water – this is when a carafe comes in especially handy!
Hang eucalyptus in your shower
Grab a few cuttings of eucalyptus and hang them in your shower, near the shower-head. Eucalyptus provokes a sense of calm, and inhaling eucalyptus has shown benefits in reducing the sensation of pain and lowering blood pressure. The plant and its oil has had a long history of usage, and there’s anecdotal evidence of it easing respiratory conditions.
Heal with aromatherapy shower steamers
Tackle sinus issues, detox and clarify your skin and feel like you’re visiting a luxury spa by incorporating shower steamers into your hygiene routine. Pop one into your shower before climbing in, and soak in the therapeutic benefits of your favourite essential oils. You can even make your own at home.
Drop the device for a self care ritual
Making time for yourself should always be a top priority. When you’ve got a busy 9-5, and tend to pick up your devices in moments of rest, it’s important to consciously set aside time for yourself without any devices or distractions. I love picking up a good book or magazine to read through in my epsom salt and lavender bath. Make it a half hour ritual at least once a week, your mind and body with thank you for it.
Up your ice game
Run of the mill ice went out the window when I discovered I could make my own own flavoured ice. Use what you choose, with anything from edible flowers, slices of fruit, and sprigs of herbs to fresh juice, or iced tea. Shop for cute ice trays online, and read up on ideas for your flavoured ice cubes here. Plus, your gourmet ice will look great in a glass!
Switch to linen bedding
There’s nothing more comfortable than settling into fresh linen bedding, and it looks great, too. I love the natural look and feel of linen.. The material is temperature regulating, anti-static, anti-bacterial. Linen keeps you cool in the summer, and warm in the winter and is more sustainable than most synthetic fabric blends.
Keep fresh flowers nearby
I’ve made keeping fresh flowers in my home a habit, because it makes me happy. Every two weeks, I spoil myself with a bunch of new flowers for my bedside. If you’ve got a garden, make your own bouquet of flowers, or support a local florist. We’re loving soft pink roses, lilies, and chrysanthemums for the summer.
Get yourself a beautiful planner
If you’re anything like me, a serial planner, then buying your yearly planner is like a ritual to you. You take time finding just the right one, with just the right kind of layout. You need enough space to journal, but you also need structure for planning. It needs to look good, and it has to be durable enough to last you the year. I’ve found my dream planner from Creativ & Heart. It has everything from daily planners to journaling prompts, gorgeous watercolour art, and a beautiful soft pink cover.
