As you endure another yet another Level 4 lockdown, you are understandably frustrated, nervous, bored, and possibly even feeling lazy. For some, fitness is a chore during these times while others consider it necessary for coping with world issues and their own issues while keeping fit. For fitness enthusiast, Liezel van der Westhuizen, fitness during this Level 4 lockdown, is an opportunity to connect with loved ones, nature and with herself.
From hotbox yoga to cold water plunges and Pugilates, South African television and radio presenter, Liezel van der Westhuizen, has inspired listeners and audiences to pursue some of the most unique fitness workouts and freshest experiences available.
Liezel is the reputable source you want giving you guidance on workout crazes. She debunks fitness myths, updates listeners on breaking fitness news and inspires audiences to get up and get healthy while having fun – regardless of size, sports background (or lack thereof), and fitness level. She also reviews an incredible range of products before they are made available to the general public. She’ll also take on TikTok challenges, wellness trends, and so much more.
While you could probably remember a few moves to establish a basic fitness regimen of your own during the Level 4 lockdown, Liezel, with her decades of fitness and sports training experience and enthusiasm, can help you with a few tips that should bring a spark to your lockdown fitness journey.
1. Find something that is fun and enjoyable, and not a chore.
If it’s a chore, you won’t always have the enthusiasm to do it properly. So, go and experiment with new workouts that you haven’t tried before, and discover something that you’ll actually enjoy – like dance battles with your pets!
2. Take it slow.
It seems repetitive and basic, but many people need the reminder. Take 10 minutes from your day to focus on your planned workout, rather than jumping into a full 1-hour workout, because then it can become very monotonous and boring.
You can watch Supersport’s 5 Colour Workout Show, where Liezel has appeared in four of the five seasons, to make these 5- to 10-minute fitness segments a fun routine. This show gives viewers the opportunity to work out in the comfort of their homes – at 7am or 5 pm, on Supersport Variety 4 (Channel 209). You could tune in and learn a new and effective exercise that you could do every day for a fraction of the time it would take you to complete a typically longer workout.
3. Get Outside!
Fresh air will do wonders for you both mentally and physically. Take a walk around your garden, or the block in your neighbourhood. Walk to buy your groceries rather than drive, and maintain good social distancing (and walking pace) while you’re out and about.
4. Find a good fitness mask.
For fitness and engaging the world beyond your home, you need a face mask that will be ideal for your breathing capabilities and gentle to your skin while you exercise your body and sweat. Here follows a link for a fitness podcast Liezel produced in which she highlights her top picks for face masks to work out in. Here Liezel reviews her 5 favorite masks
5. Work out in your kitchen.
Seriously! Put on some of your favourite mid-to-upbeat songs in a playlist (Liezel likes Beyonce and 90s R&B), and dance and sing while you get some water, cook a meal, or prepare a snack. The happiness and silliness you feel when you’re letting loose with your usual impromptu jam session, is one of the best ways to improve your wellness.
