The first three months of the year are behind us, which means it’s time for a reality check. Maybe you kicked off January full of motivation, convinced this would be the year you finally stick to your goals. Or perhaps you set targets out of habit, only to realise that life has other plans. Whatever the case, Q1 offers the perfect moment to pause, reflect, and—if needed—adjust course.

Are your goals still serving you?
A lot can change in three months. What seemed like a priority in January might feel irrelevant now, and that’s completely normal. The real mistake isn’t in letting go of a goal that no longer serves you—it’s in clinging to it just because you wrote it down. Take an honest look at what you set out to achieve. Does it still excite you? Does it still make sense for where you are right now? If the answer is no, it’s time for an update.
Small tweaks make a big difference
If you’re struggling with a goal, it doesn’t always mean you need to scrap it. Sometimes, a small adjustment is all it takes to get back on track. Maybe your original plan was too vague, making it hard to measure progress. Instead of a general aim like “get fit,” narrowing it down to something specific—like committing to two workouts a week—can make it feel more achievable. The same goes for career goals, financial targets, or personal development plans. If something feels overwhelming, break it into smaller steps and tackle it one piece at a time.
Be honest about what’s holding you back
If a goal isn’t working, there’s usually a reason. Have you genuinely been too busy, or have you been avoiding it because it feels too difficult? Sometimes, all that’s needed is a change in strategy. If you haven’t made progress because your schedule is too packed, could you shift things around to make space? If lack of motivation is the issue, would an accountability partner help? Identifying the real obstacle is key to finding a solution that works.
Progress isn’t always linear
One of the biggest reasons people abandon their goals is because they expect perfection. A minor setback feels like failure, so they give up entirely. But real progress rarely happens in a straight line. Some weeks will be better than others, and that’s fine. The important thing is to keep going, even if you have to slow down or take a different route than planned.
It’s not too late to start again
If Q1 didn’t go the way you hoped, don’t let that convince you that the rest of the year is a lost cause. The best time to get back on track is right now. Goals aren’t meant to be rigid—they should evolve as you do. Adjust, refine, and keep moving forward. The year is far from over, and you have plenty of time to make it count.
