While each season brings its own charm, my favourite has to be Spring, the season that holds precious space between the cosiness of winter and the long days of summer.

Wildflowers are in bloom and fledglings are in flight as the Cape awakens from its winter slumber to the promise of all things new with the arrival of warmer, brighter days. The air carries a floral fragrance, and you’re embraced by a sense of anticipation, filled with excitement for what lies ahead, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Adrienne Bredeveldt.
It took a shrill of excitement from my four-year-old on our way to school to shake me back into the wonder of Spring: ‘Mum!’
My knee-jerk reaction was, ‘What’s wrong?’
She replied, ‘Look at the beautiful flowers, mum.’
She saw the flowers while my attention was so focused on the chaotic morning traffic that all I could see was the line of cars in front of me.
If anyone had asked me if there were flowers along the way to school, I would have bet my life against it. I looked up, and it was almost as if I had to change my mental attitude or become less tense before I could see what she was seeing.
It took a moment, but she shook me out of the mundane worry of day-to-day life and allowed me a peek into what the drive to school looks like to her. We spent the rest of the car journey in awe of the pretty flowers, and almost everything we passed had a purpose and added value – even the inflatable tall boy blowing in the breeze outside of the car dealership had a story.
I dropped her off at school before joining the morning traffic again, but it was different now. I was different; instead of being tense, I felt happy and less occupied with that ever-present anxious feeling of adulting.
And even though Spring doesn’t officially start until 23 September, nature has already begun its vibrant transformation, adorning itself with colourful blooms all around, bees in a flurry, and the early morning melodious songs of birds.
This Spring, I plan on transforming too by not letting negativity and uncontrollable factors occupy too much mental space. Instead, I’ll tend to my well-being and spend more time on things that fill me with the enthusiasm of a curious four-year-old, nurturing my inner self.
So while the flowers are blooming this Springtime, I’ll be blossoming too.
