Sometimes, the difference between a relaxed space and an anxious one is all to do with lighting. There are three main forms of lighting – namely ambient, accent and task lighting. All three forms create different atmospheres in a home. Let’s get into these different forms of lighting, and how to change the look and feel of a space with just the flick of a switch.
Ambient lighting sets the mood
Ambient lighting serves as the foundation of your lighting at home. Ambient lighting aims to illuminate an entire room and is often achieved with regular ceiling lights overhead, or with wall sconces.
Ambient light, in itself, can be either cool or warm light. Cool light has an almost blueish tint ideal for concentration, while warm light has a yellowish hue, which is more cosy and atmospheric. This is the most basic form of lighting, though – you flick a switch, and the entire room is illuminated.
Accent lighting shows off the details
Accent lighting is all about drawing attention to specific features or areas within a room.
By adding focused light to architectural elements like shelves, artwork, or cherished objects, a sense of depth and visual interest is created and elevates the overall design of a space. Think track lights illuminating a gallery wall, or strategically placed lights highlighting a centerpiece. It’s all about creating a spotlight for the main character elements in your home.
Task lighting for functionality and flair
Task lighting is used in kitchens, living rooms and studies or offices to provide enough light for activities or tasks without the harshness of an overhead light. Having pops of light around the house, only where you need them, creates a warm, relaxed atmosphere.
Desk lamps, under-cabinet lights, and pendant fixtures are all examples of task lighting that can be tailored to your tasks. Warm lighting usually works best for task areas that require focus, whereas a cooler light may work better for precision in the kitchen or bathroom, it depends on the space.
With that knowledge, taking on the task of lighting to create the atmosphere you’re going for at home will be a piece of cake. Remember, you don’t need to pick one form of lighting. Including a mix of all three in separate areas at home will give you the freedom of creating ambiance in any room, easily.
