You might think that cleaning your headboard isn’t that important, because, how much dirt could it possibly accumulate? But, you’d be surprised, and in all honesty, you need to clean your headboard at least once a week.
Why should you clean your headboard weekly?
This was the first thought that popped into my head when I saw this on TikTok. But, headboards gather a lot of gross things. Other than dust, headboards collect dead skin cells, dirt and even pet dander.
Depending on the type of headboard in your bedroom, more dust and dirt will likely gather. For example, fabric headboards will be far worse than wooden headboards. Regardless though, it’s the one bedroom item that shouldn’t be forgotten during your weekly cleans.

How to clean your headboard
Now that we know the why, let’s get into how we can clean our headboards correctly.
Upholstered headboards
Upholstered headboards are a popular choice for their comfort and style. However, their fabric surface can trap dust and allergens more easily than other materials. Here’s how to clean an upholstered headboard:
Vacuum: Start by thoroughly vacuuming the headboard using the upholstery attachment. This will remove dust, hair, and other loose debris. Be sure to get into all the nooks and crannies, especially if you have a tufted headboard.
Spot cleaning: For tougher stains, you can use a mild upholstery cleaner. Test the cleaner on an inconspicuous area of the headboard first to make sure it doesn’t cause any discolouration. Once you’ve tested the cleaner, apply it to a clean, white cloth and gently dab the stain. Avoid over saturating the fabric. Allow the area to air dry completely before using the bed again.
Deodorise: To freshen up your upholstered headboard, you can sprinkle it with baking soda and let it sit for 30 minutes. The baking soda will absorb any odours that may be lingering. Vacuum off the baking soda thoroughly.
Leather headboards
Leather headboards add a touch of luxury to the bedroom. Leather is a relatively easy material to care for, but it still needs occasional cleaning to prevent it from cracking or drying out. Here’s how to clean a leather headboard:
Dust: Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe down the entire surface of the headboard. This will remove dust and any other surface dirt.
Conditioning: Every few months, it’s a good idea to condition your leather headboard with a leather conditioner designed for furniture. This will help to keep the leather supple and prevent it from cracking. Be sure to follow the instructions on the conditioner carefully.
Wooden headboards
Wood headboards can add warmth and character to a bedroom. They are also relatively easy to clean. Here’s how to clean a wood headboard:
Dust: Use a soft, dry cloth to dust the headboard regularly. You can also use a microfiber cloth for a deeper clean.
Spot cleaning: For tougher stains, you can use a damp cloth with a mild soap solution. Be sure to wring out the cloth thoroughly so that it’s just damp, not soaking wet. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the wood.
Metal headboards
Metal headboards can add a modern or industrial touch to a bedroom. They are also very easy to clean. Here’s how to clean a metal headboard:
Wipe down: Use a damp cloth with a mild soap solution to wipe down the entire surface of the headboard. You can also use a disinfectant wipe if you want to disinfect the surface.
Dry thoroughly: Be sure to dry the metal headboard completely after cleaning to prevent rust.
