If you’ve ever pulled out a shirt or dress from storage that would be perfect for your next event and discovered a rust stain, you know how devastating it can be. And trying to remove rust stains from clothes is no easy feat.
Luckily, with these easy tricks, you can easily get rid of those stubborn red-brown marks.
What you’re NOT going to do:
Put that bottle of Jik far, far away. Standard bleach is not going to work, and unfortunately, it might even make your problem much worse. As these stains are so tough, a wash in your washing machine on a high setting isn’t going to help either.
And, for the sake of your clothes, do NOT put them in the tumble dryer until you’re sure the stain is completely gone. The heat will set the stain, and then there’ll be no getting rid of it.

Lemon and salt
One of the best ways to get rid of rust stains is using some lemon juice and salt! This combo works best on whites, but you can try it on your coloured clothes too. You should test it on these clothes beforehand to avoid unexpected lemon-bleach stains.
All you need to do is dash some salt onto the rust stain and squeeze some lemon juice over the salt. Then, simply lay the stained piece of clothing out in the sun, and make sure the stain catches as many rays as possible.
After a few hours, pop your garment in the wash with some heavy-duty laundry soap. Then, hang it out to dry or make sure the rust stain is completely gone before tossing it into the tumble dryer.
Make your own rust stain removing paste
You can make your own rust-busting paste with a teaspoon of vinegar, 1 teaspoon baking soda and a few drops of hydrogen peroxide. Apply the paste onto the stain, and let it work its magic for about half an hour.
After some time, rinse your stained clothes, and viola, you shouldn’t have a horrible stain anymore!
Vanish works
Of course, if you’re not a DIYer, you can pop into your closest grocer and grab a South African staple – Vanish! Follow the instructions on the bottle, and you should be ready!
By utilizing these tried-and-tested methods, your clothes can bid farewell to rust stains and welcome back their spotless glory. Keep your style statement strong and say goodbye to unwanted stains!
