If your front loader washing machine is giving you grief, chances are it’s due to a jammed filter – thankfully, cleaning a filter is uncomplicated. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clean and restore the filter of your front loader machine to its former glory.
A clean filter can alleviate a host of minor washing machine malfunctions, from noisy vibrations that drive you dilly to incomplete cycles, and overly wet or smelly laundry.
If you have a front loader, the steps for cleaning your machine’s filter are pretty much universal, but there are a few machines with exceptions. If you’ve got a top loader, this article isn’t for you, as the placement of your machine’s filter will typically differ from the placement of a front loader’s.
Cleaning the filter of your front loader
Your first step, is to find the filter. Most front-load washers have the filter located behind a small panel on the bottom front of the machine. Look for a designated access panel, often hidden behind a kickplate or covered by a cap.
Step 1: Start by switching off the appliance and disconnecting the power, followed by turning off the water supply.
Step 2: Lay a towel on the floor and position a large tray or shallow container on top of it to catch any residual water or buildup.
Step 3: Unclip the panel and pump cover to access the black drain hose. Do not unscrew the filter (often located to either side of the hose) before accessing the hose.
Step 4: Remove the cap from the drain hose and allow the water from the hose to drain into the tray. You may need to repeat this step until all the water is drained.
Step 5: Once the water is drained, place the cap on the drain hose and position it securely.
Step 6: Then, you’ll want to unscrew the filter cap in an anti-clockwise direction and slide it out. Be prepared for water to spill onto the towel.
Step 7: Check the filter for any obstructions such as coins, buttons, or lint buildup, and clean it thoroughly (we recommend washing with sunlight).
Step 8: Make sure that the impeller moves freely without any hindrance.
Step 9: Screw the filter cap back tightly into its locked vertical position.
Step 10: Close the pump cover and ensure it clicks into place securely.
