South African vet Dr. Amir Anwary recently took to TikTok to share a cautionary tale about a dog that ended up in the hospital after eating a common household food.
Knowing the emotional distress and high veterinary costs associated with hospitalising a pet, Dr. Anwary highlights four common household foods that dog owners should never share with their dogs, as they are toxic to them.
1. Macadamia nuts
“The toxic component of macadamia nuts is not entirely known,” says Dr. Anwary. “It’s a scary toxicity as it causes muscle fasciculations and nervous system signs which mimic malicious poisoning,” he adds. Since these nuts are often salted, dogs may find them tasty, which makes accidental ingestion even more likely.

2. Yeast and raw dough
If your dog eats raw dough, it can expand in their stomach, leading to dangerous bloating or even gastric volvulus, a life-threatening condition. Plus, as yeast ferments, it produces ethanol, which can result in alcohol poisoning. “It’s bad on two fronts,” adds Dr. Anwary.

3. Avocados
While the flesh of an avocado isn’t harmful, the leaves, bark, and pit contain persin, a toxin that’s dangerous for dogs. It is safer not to allow your dogs to develop a taste for avocado, says Dr. Anwary.

4. Grapes and raisins
Grapes and raisins are highly unpredictable when it comes to toxicity. Some dogs can eat them without issue, while others suffer kidney failure from just a few. Dr. Anwary explains that tartaric acid is the likely culprit, making these fruits too risky to feed to dogs.

Dr. Anwary also warns against chocolate, onions, garlic, chives, xylitol, and alcohol—common ingredients that can be harmful or fatal to dogs.
