Summer is the perfect time of year where we get to enjoy picnics with family, play fun games outside and cool off in the swimming pool.

But there is nothing quite like getting sick in summer. You don’t get to participate in fun outdoor activities, instead you rather end up isolated from everyone around you since you don’t want to pass on the flu to them.
Here are some places you might be travelling to this summer and how you can avoid getting sick:
The picnic
If you are headed outdoors for a picnic in the yard or the botanical gardens, then it’s best you prepare. Before you sit down to eat the snacks you made, wash your hands and encourage your children to do the same. Most public parks will have taps and water fountains for you to wash your hands at. Just keep a small hand soap or liquid soap in your handbag which you can use whenever you wash your hands. For extra germ protection, use a hand sanitiser, which is easy to carry and always accessible if you are nowhere near a tap.
The plane
Are you hopping on a plane for your summer holiday? Just make sure you are extra careful with handwashing while you fly. Because the plane is an enclosed space, naturally anyone who is sick will be sharing it with you. By washing your hands frequently, you are limiting the chance of getting sick from touching a contaminated surface and then transferring germs into your body via your eyes, nose or mouth.
The pool
Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a swimming pool at their homes. That’s where public swimming pools come to the rescue – they provide Olympic-sized pools which the community can cool down in. They are fun to go to, and if you bring some snacks from home, you can have a family picnic at the pool too. However, the number of germs that these areas harbour are astounding. Take, for instance, the showers – the floors, in particular, are a hotbed for fungi and bacteria. Pop on your flip-flops when you head to the showers to rinse off the chlorine from the pool and you can avoid that unsightly enemy they call athletes foot.
