Heading to the beach to soak up some sun? You know I am! Packing my beach bag brings me so much joy – the right essentials can make your day by the seaside. I often fall victim to over-packing because I’m a ‘just in case’ kind of girl. If you need something, I’m the one to have it in my beach bag.
Here’s a guide to what’s in my beach bag—and why each item is a must-have for a carefree and enjoyable beach day
What’s in my beach bag?
Sunscreen
I will typically reach for the tanning oil to achieve golden tan, but I also know that protecting the skin – especially the face – from harmful UV rays is a non-negotiable. I always go for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and I reapply every two hours or after swimming.
If you enjoy tanning, please do so responsibly and layer a quality SPF protection with your tanning products.
Reusable water bottle
A day in the sun can have you feeling parched. Staying hydrated is crucial. Opt for an insulated water bottle to keep your drinks cold all day.
Beach towel
A large, absorbent beach towel doubles as a place to sit or lie down and is perfect for drying off after a swim. Look for quick-dry options to avoid carrying extra water weight. A pretty beach towel can offer an aesthetic finish to a cute beach picture.
Hat and sunglasses
Every single opportunity deserves a chic look, including a beach day. A wide-brimmed hat provides shade for your face and neck, while sunglasses reduce glare and protect your eyes from UV damage. I often have multiple pairs of sunnies in my bag for options on the beach. Your sunglasses can complete your beach ensemble.
Snacks
I am not leaving the house without snacks, ever. A full day in the sun can make you famished, and beaches in South Africa often don’t have nearby food stalls. Keep hunger at bay with easy-to-pack snacks like fresh fruit, mini sandwiches and sweets. Choose non-perishable options if you’ll be out for several hours.
Swimwear cover-up
A stylish cover-up allows me to transition seamlessly from the beach to a nearby café or boardwalk. It’s also an added layer of protection from the sun. I also keep another outfit and jersey near by incase of after beach day plans or if the weather suddenly changes and the wind chill factor picks up.
Waterproof phone pouch
Protecting my phone from sand and water with a waterproof pouch is very important. Some even allow you to take underwater photos and create unforgettable memories.
Mini first aid kit
Yes! you read correctly. Be prepared for any minor mishaps with essentials like adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers. Headaches caused by the heat are common and can really ruin the day. Pack your paracetamol!
Reusable tote bag
I keep a reusable bag in my bag to keep trash and dirt out of nature by packing a reusable tote for any waste.
