21-year-old pilot, author, and NPO founder Megan Werner took to Instagram on Sunday to share news that she had been shot in a home invasion incident on the evening of 6 October, when Werner and her friends were at home having a braai.

According to Werner, four assailants broke into her Lanseria farm property and opened fire on Friday night.
Megan sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Fortunately, none of her friends were injured.
Megan took to TikTok on Monday, sharing an update from her hospital bed in ICU.
“Ja nee kyk, dis lekker in die land van Suid Afrika” she said in Afrikaans, before explaining the incident:
“So basically, we got robbed last night.”
“They broke into our house, I was having a braai with my friends. The next moment, four guys come running in, shooting everywhere. Luckily only I got shot, and none of my friends got hurt.”
In a comment posted to the video later by Werner, she added that one of the assailants had the gun pointed at her chest before she managed to fight back with a broom.
She continues:
“But ja, we’ve got a lekker one here in the leg, it was rather painful.”
Werner then goes on to add that she was in the ICU after coming out of surgery for the gunshot wound to her leg. She added that she would be there until Monday this week and that she is hoping for a smooth recovery.
“I just got out of surgery, they stitched up the main artery and the muscles that got shot, so I’m in ICU until Monday, and then hopefully it goes better from there.”

According to a report from the Insider published in 2021, Werner lives on a family farm based in Lanseria.
Baklei vir Boere, a collective fighting against farm murders in South Africa, reposted Werner’s video to Instagram on Monday, adding the hashtags #stopfarmmurders #stopfarmattacks. Werner later reposted the video, thanking everyone for the support.
One commenter on TikTok said “Why are we not even safe in our own homes . This country…” to which Werner replied: “It messed up… and the cops won’t even catch them”.
Megan is a trained commercial pilot, author, and motivational speaker. In 2021, at just nineteen-years-old, she celebrated completing Cape To Cairo, where she and 20 other teenagers assembled and flew an aircraft from Cape Town to Cairo, Egypt.
Megan later co-authored a book with Daniella van Heerden, called As Jy Droom, which documents her journey as a young pilot completing Cape to Cairo.
No updates regarding the incident have since been posted by Megan.
