2024’s calendar promises 14 public holidays in South Africa, including two ‘extra’ days off.
The first of these additional public holidays is expected to be announced ahead of the anticipated 2024 national elections.
While a date is yet to be officially announced for the elections, previous years suggest that the day of voting is typically declared a public holiday by the President. This decision allows citizens to exercise their right to vote without the constraint of work obligations.
The second extra day off is slated for 17th June 2024, which serves as the observation of Youth Day falling on 16th June. As per the Public Holidays Act (Act No 36 of 1994) stipulation, whenever a public holiday, such as Youth Day, falls on a Sunday, the Act mandates that the subsequent Monday be recognised as a public holiday.
