A recent study discovered that South Africans spend more time in front of screens than people in any other country.
The study, conducted by Electronics Hub, based on data from DataReportal’s Digital 2023: Global Overview Report, found that South Africans spend a total of 58.2% of their days on screens.
South Africa also leads in social media and personal computer (PC) usage, with 22.5% of the day spent on social media and 26.7% on PCs. This trend reflects the country’s growing internet access and digitally active population.
However, these statistics also raise concern, as excess screen time is linked to various mental and physical health problems.
While South Africa tops the list, other countries like Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and Chile also show significant screen time rates. Japan boasts the lowest screen time rates.
As the world becomes increasingly digital, finding a healthy balance in screen time is crucial, for all ages. While there have been plenty of guidelines created for children’s screen time, experts are divided on appropriate usage for adults.
As per The South African, Yalda T. Uhls – a professor of psychology at UCLA – suggests focusing on the type of content consumed online rather than the amount of time spent on screens. However, maintaining a healthy balance and being mindful of screen time habits are crucial for overall well-being.
Some health experts recommend a two-hour daily limit for screen time, including social media and video games.
