Born in Bonnievale, Western Cape, in 1939, Breytenbach’s work transcended borders, addressing injustice through his art and activism. His marriage to Yolande Ngo Thi Hoang Lien in 1962 defied apartheid’s laws against interracial unions. His activism led to his imprisonment in South Africa in 1975, but he was released in 1982 through international advocacy and later became a French citizen.
Tributes from family and leaders
Breytenbach’s daughter, Daphnée, described him as “the most exceptional being I have ever known,” adding that his art and resilience will continue to inspire. President Emmanuel Macron called him a “ferryman of freedom” and praised his role in strengthening ties between France and South Africa. President Cyril Ramaphosa honoured him as a “humanist” and a fierce critic of apartheid.
