Camps Bay High School recently hosted a ‘Prefect Takeover Assembly’ for its 800 students. Instead of the school’s principal, Mr. Mostert, hosting the assembly, the students had a go at running the programme which included an epic lip-syncing battle between teachers and students.
In a viral video posted to social media last weekend, History and Social Sciences teacher Mr. Howell put on a lip-syncing performance of epic proportions for the students of Camps Bay High School.
In the video – which has amassed over 145 000 views in under a week – Mr. Howell performs a mash-up of timeless hits from Backstreet Boys‘ I Want It That Way to Rihanna’s Umbrella and DJ Khaled’s All I Do Is Win.
Lip-syncing isn’t the only talent this Cape Town teacher boasts on stage – he effortlessly busts a move, too.
As Mr. Howell’s top-notch performance reaches its end, his lip-syncing nemesis, Mr. Nicholas Scott, enters the floor – b-boy style, prompting Mr. Howell to end with a legendary move – the infamous ‘snake’.
Of course, this warranted nothing less than a standing ovation from Camps Bay High students.
In speaking to Good Things Guy – who originally covered the viral video – Mr. Howell says:
“I couldn’t have done this without the help of students! Morgan Stoffels and Ayla Maharaj-Goodman assisted in choreographing and rehearsing the piece with me. Also, a big shoutout to the teachers who are in the classrooms every day, navigating challenging environments.”
Adding:
“I had a lot of fun doing it. This did take me out of my comfort zone quite a bit – doing something like this in front of the whole school and I did feel nervous but it was a great way to connect with the entire school. As much as this was a lot of fun, the true heroes are the teachers in classrooms everyday, in difficult spaces.”
