We’re a little obsessed with anything royal, from Duchess Kate’s impeccable fashion sense to monarchs who ruled 100 years ago. And this year hasn’t been short of royal TV shows to feed our fascination…
Here’s our list of the top royal TV shows you simply can’t miss:
The Crown
This moving biographical drama, focusing on the life of Queen Elizabeth, cleaned up at this year’s awards season, and rightly so. Claire Foy plays the lead role of Elizabeth who’s constantly forced to choose between her personal life and the welfare of England after she’s crowned monarch at the tender age of 27. The series is beautifully shot, and tracks personal and political events in the first half of the 20th century. Definitely worth binge watching!

Check it out! We’re also loving Netflix’s dark comedy original, Santa Clarita Diet:
Victoria
Back for a second season in September, this series is simply stunning. Based on the life story of Queen Victoria and her marriage to German royal, Prince Albert – a relationship that spanned most of the 1800s – this story follows everything from trouble with handmaids to the attempt on Victoria’s life and the births of her children. You’ll love the lavish costumes, castle settings and brilliant performances by Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes in the two lead roles.
Season two starts this September on ITV Choice, DStv channel 12

War and Peace
This six-part mini-series, based on Leo Tolstoy’s celebrated novel, is packed with drama and heart-breaking stories of love in the time of war. The all-star cast features the likes of Lily James, James Norton and Paul Dano who tell the story of Russian nobility over a period that spans the Russian war against Napoleon. It’s poignant and emotional, and will leave you wanting to start again at the first episode. The waltz between Prince Andrei and Natasha is something you won’t easily forget.

And one extra…
Jackie
Not a TV show, and not technically about a royal family, but we couldn’t leave this off our list – and, Jackie O and JF Kennedy are certainly considered American royalty in our book. Natalie Portman delivers one of her best performances yet as the grieving and mentally shattered widow, Jackie Kennedy, who must face a lonely life in the spotlight after she loses her husband in the famous assassination. It’s a stark and revealing look at one of the bravest and most renowned first-ladies we’ve ever seen.
