From using coconut oil to replace unhealthy fats to ultra-hydrating coconut water, it seems that anything coconut is on trend.
Find out why you should ditch your cleanser for honey
The latest, coconut milk, isn’t just a great alternative for dairy products. Here are 8 fabulous DIY beauty products that we’ve fallen in love with.
Use it for your hair
Coconut milk is known to help restore tired hair and promote growth because of its high fat, protein and vitamin e content. Make your own leave in conditioner by combining a ¼ cup of melted coconut oil, 1 table spoon of jojoba oil, 1 table spoon of argan oil, full fat coconut milk and at least 10 drops of an essential oil of your choice.
For something a little more luxe try a coconut milk hair mask. By adding pureed banana, a tablespoon of honey and a couple of strawberries to the coconut milk you can create the perfect hair conditioner. Apply the mask to dry hair and wash away after 20 minutes for that deep cleansed feel.
Use it for your face
Take advantage of the natural wonder’s antibacterial properties by using it as a cleanser. Make a balanced and nourishing facial cleanser by mixing a teaspoon of creamy yoghurt with a few drops of concentrated coconut milk. Spread the mixture evenly across your face just as you would any other cleanser, leave for 5 minutes and wipe off with a wet cloth. The result? Extra silky smooth skin.
You can also make your very own coconut milk scrub. Mix equal parts coconut milk and sugar with an essential oil of your choosing. For best results, massage the scrub into your dry areas while you’re in the shower and rinse clean for soft and smooth skin.
For your body
Treat yourself to an ultra-moisturising homemade body wash. Combine equal parts of full fat coconut milk and liquid castile soap, like the Pure Simple Castile Liquid Cleaner available from Faithful to Nature.
The body wash may separate after sitting, but that’s nothing a quick shake can’t fix.
The milk also makes a super soothing body lotion, especially if you’ve spent too much time in the sun. Combine cucumber, aloe lotion and coconut milk to make a refreshing lotion that will cool down burning skin.
Use it to indulge
Bath milk is a fantastic way to treat and moisturise your skin. Switch things up a little by combining coconut milk with oatmeal and honey. Not only will this help you unwind but it will rehydrate dry winter skin.
Make your own bath soak by combining coconut milk and lavender. This combination will not only make your skin feel soft and supple, but it also acts as a great remedy for insomnia.
To get the most out of your handmade coconut milk products, be sure to use the full fat variety. If possible buy organic. This will ensure that your product has the highest possible amount of lauric acid, the key ingredient that acts as an antibacterial element as well as helps in the reduction of protein loss.
