The long-awaited biopic of the legendary Material Girl by Madonna sadly won’t be making it to screen, any time soon. The film has been scrapped after Madonna announced her new upcoming world tour.
In the biopic, the Vogue singer was meant to be played by Ozark actress Julia Garner, but we will sadly no longer be able to see Julia bring the Materiel Girl era back to life.

It was reported in an article by Variety that Universal Pictures pulled out of the project when news broke about Madonna’s world tour announcement. The film was in its developing stages for about three years now, since 2020. Their alleged withdrawal from the project also has to do with the fact that her tour announcement came with sold-out shows almost instantaneously.
The film even had a working title of “Little Sparrow“, however, the casting around the film raked in controversial reactions.
According to THR, Julia Garner, Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, Odessa Young and Emma Laird are in the running to play Madonna in an upcoming biopic.

This is what fans had to say when Garner was announced as the chosen lead:
If Julia Garner is doing this in the movie the Oscar is hers! https://t.co/Lcp86fwGI7

Maybe it’s too soon to say (we DO have to see the movie still) but I’m struggling to think of examples of casting as perfect as Julia Garner as Madonna – & it goes far beyond the physical similarities. A performer as powerful as Garner will embody this role to the FULLEST extent. pic.twitter.com/uMlmyR2IN1

Madonna shared in an interview in 2020:
“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the rollercoaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”
Madonna announced her world tour on Instagram a week ago, captioning “the celebration tour, 4 decades.”
