If you’ve popped into the V&A Waterfront recently, you’ll notice a new addition, bursting with colour in our favourite shade – female.
A pop-up exhibition snuck onto the scene at the Centre Court titled Celebrating Women in collaboration with Emerging Artists Cape Town and FAME WEEK Africa.
A sucker for any art exhibition, I wondered in curiously, drawn to the diverse visual perceptions and representations of women in our country, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Ashleigh Nefdt.
A quick stop at the shops had turned into an artistic adventure, and I was not sorry for it.
Some of the canvases are tiny, challenging the massive portraits that don’t actually overpower the little guys. The mediums are all diverse as are the messages, but the constant is that brush of knowing that under-resourced artists are having their moment, and using the well-loved muses, women, to do so.
Taahira Luddy’s Ascension stood out for me in the way that great pieces of art do – they make you do a double take. Something about its almost futuristic composition with that touch of goddess energy gave me goosebumps.
And DIVINITY by Micke Buitendag had me staring unapologetically. I definitely have two new artwork crushes.
Beyond the pop-up, the City has also launched an extension of its celebration at the V&A Amphitheatre in collaboration with the City’s Safety and Security Directorate and the Community Service and Health Directorate.
“The exhibition is a stepping stone towards great opportunities – this is why we support the exhibition in the run-up to the big FAME Week Africa event. As an opportunity City, we need to make sure we create platforms for development and empower talented individuals. We are aware of the huge role our creative and art industries play in job creation and in boosting the local economy,” shared the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
The exhibits are running until 22 August, setting the ultimate stage for 24 August.
