Dis Ek, Anna
Based on the semi-autobiographical book by the same name, this film explores the hardships fictional character Anna Bruwer goes through after eight years of sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather when she was a child. You will be stunned to silence as you discover the point of no return to which her torment has pushed her. The film is in Afrikaans, with English subtitles. Out 23 October
Black Mass
Brace yourself for this dramatic biopic, which brings together two of Hollywood’s biggest names: Johnny Depp, who plays James “Whitey” Bulger, brother to Boston senator William “Billy” Bulger, played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Depp’s character is a violent criminal who becomes an FBI informant to take down a mafia family. Out 16 October
The Prophet
This passion-inspiring work of literature by Kahlil Gibran is brought to life in a stunningly animated form. It tells the story of Mustafa (voice of Liam Neeson), an exiled poet and artist, his housekeeper Kamila (voice of Salma Hayek), and Kamila’s daughter Almitra, who go on a journey against all odds. You’ll find yourself swept up by the poetry of the conversations and the beauty of the imagery. Out 9 October
Life
The dreamy Dane DeHaan stars as James Dean in this flick about a Life magazine photographer (played by another hunk, Robert Pattinson) tasked with taking photos of the cool and oftentimes evasive actor. The film chronicles their time together over a journey between cities leading up to the release of the film East of Eden in 1955. A touching reflection of the man who died too young. Out 9 October
Pawn Sacrifice
During the Cold War, Bobby Fischer (Tobey Maguire), a young self-taught chess champion from Brooklyn, New York, aspires to compete against Soviet Grandmaster Boris Spassky (Liev Schreiber). The pressure surrounding his historical feat drives him to severe paranoia, verging on madness. This film is based on a true story, and will leave you keen to try your own hand at the game of logic.
