AI has taken over almost every aspect of people’s day-to-day lives. But it seems that machine learning and AI have crept into online dating too. Yes, AI and dating seem to be becoming so intertwined that it’s changing how we approach dating apps.
But it’s not as scary as you think it might be.
What place does AI have in dating?
Basically, dating apps have been leveraging AI and machine learning (an application of AI), for some time now. The reason? To fix online dating.
If you haven’t been single in the modern day, or used online dating for any reason, let me summarize what it’s like fake profiles, endless swiping with “so-called best matches”, ghosting, and figuring out who’s who in an endless scroll of group photos. And this is the case for every dating app out there – no matter what they claim.
But the answer to these problems, according to the Tec lords behind these apps is AI.
In fact, machine learning (an application of AI) has been a prime feature of Bumble for some time already. It uses AI to help users put their best (and most effective) picture first. Tinder is apparently jumping on this bandwagon and will launch a feature later this year that scours your camera roll and picks the most likely images that will get you swipes.
People have also used the likes of ChatGPT to help craft snazzy bios and answer those pesky prompts that allegedly help people get a sense of your vibe.
So, in short, yes AI dating does have a place in online dating, mainly because it’s already cemented itself there, albeit relatively quietly.
What else can AI do for online dating?
While AI and the crazy advancement of technology can be scary and make us feel like we’re moving toward an iRobot future, it can help make online dating safer.
Bumble has announced a new feature called Deception Detector – AI that helps detect fake and spam accounts. It follows their quietly launched Private Detector, which helps detect and remove sexually explicit photos. Overall, this creates a safer and more secure space for people (well, let’s be honest – women) online.
Now, it won’t necessarily fix everything that’s wrong with online dating – no one can fix the same bios that every Brad and Chad has on their profile (you can stop telling us your height, it’s really not that big a deal). And AI still has a long way to go.
At the end of the day, AI still tends to show prejudice, and to be fair … using AI to help you date – like running your dating app convos through an AI bot (yes people do that) can come across as weird and impersonal.
Regardless though, it seems that the link between AI and dating is here to stay. Let’s just hope that it will be as successful in helping us singletons navigate the dating space as the tech geniuses say it will be.
