South African thrillers have become better and better with more of them being produced for multiple streaming sites.
Here are some of our favourite thrilling movies and series that you can stream.
- “Blood & Water” (Netflix): This teen drama series follows a high school student who investigates the mysterious disappearance of her sister while navigating her own personal challenges.
- “Trackers” (Showmax): Based on Deon Meyer’s novel, this crime thriller series follows a group of individuals, including a detective, a hired assassin, and a tech expert, whose lives intersect as they pursue criminals involved in a terrorist plot.
- “Queen Sono” (Netflix): This action-packed series follows a highly trained South African spy, Queen Sono, played by Pearl Thusi, who tackles dangerous missions while dealing with personal turmoil.

4. “Hard Copy” (Showmax): This legal drama series focuses on a journalist who becomes embroiled in a web of corruption and conspiracy after uncovering a shocking secret.
5. “Reyka” (Showmax): Reyka, played by Kim Engelbrecht, is a specialised detective that investigates the disappearance of young girls. This slow-burning crime thriller tackles unnerving issues of kidnapping and Stockholm syndrome, as Reyka is the survivor of a kidnapping herself and battles with her own demons while fighting the bad guys in her daily occupation and raising her daughter as a single mother. Engelbrecht was nominated for an Emmy for her performance.
6. “The Girl from St. Agnes” (Showmax): Set in a prestigious all-girls boarding school, this murder mystery series follows a student’s investigation into the death of a fellow student while uncovering dark secrets that put her own life at risk.

7. Still Breathing” (Showmax): This psychological thriller series revolves around a successful but troubled artist who becomes the prime suspect in a murder investigation.
8. “iNumber Number” (Netflix) – This action-packed crime thriller movie follows a cop who turns to the dark side when he decides to steal a shipment of drugs to secure his family’s future.
9. Horisonne (Showmax) – This thrilling series follows Melissa, a psychologist, who learns that her ex-lover, Melchior van Staden, has set up Horisonne, a mindfulness estate where he seems to be brainwashing young men and women, spiritually and psychologically. She’s even more concerned when she discovers that her 18-year-old daughter, Adri, whom she had given up for adoption, is now the cult leader’s right-hand woman
10. “Nommer 37” (Movie) – This Hitchcock-inspired thriller centres around a wheelchair-bound man who, through his apartment window, becomes entangled in a criminal underworld after witnessing a murder. Available on Netflix.
