The ceremony
1. Olivia Colman’s acceptance speech
If she wasn’t our favourite before last night, she certainly is now. In one of the most relatable and genuine acceptance speeches of the night, after winning the award for Best Actress, the actress thanked everyone from her co-star Emma Stone and her agent, to her husband and children. She also promised to ‘snog’ anyone she forgot to mention and told Glenn Close she’d looked up to her for years. We’ll be watching this speech – as well as Olivia’s film The Favourite – on repeat.
2. Melissa McCarthy’s on-stage get-up
When presenting the award for Best Costume Design, Oscar-nominee Melissa McCarthy and If Beale Street Could Talk star Brian Tyree Henry were nothing short of fabulous in their exaggerated outfits. Melissa’s look reminded us of the period drama The Favourite – complete with several ‘rabbit fur’ accents and Brian gave his best Mary Poppins impression in his lace dress and gloves. They very nearly stole the show…
Melissa’s pre-Oscars excitement is also worth a mention here. No such thing as too many exclamation marks!!!
3. The chemistry between Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper
How could their Oscars performance not make this list? There wasn’t a dry eye in the theatre when Cooper and Gaga took to the stage to perform A Star is Born song, Shallow – which, incidentally also took home the award for Best Original Song. Singing cheek to cheek, they were picture perfect.

4. When these three brilliant women helped kick off the show…
Though this year’s ceremony was host-free, Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler performed a mock monologue to get things going, and we’re so glad they did. If the Academy is looking for a delightful trio to host the Oscars next year, these ladies get our vote.

5. Samuel L. Jackson’s surprise hug
The veteran actor presented the award for Best Adapted Screenplay and when director Spike Lee came to collect his prized statue, it’s safe to say the Oscar-winner was overcome with excitement. Jumping into Samuel L. Jackson’s arms in a squeal-worthy embrace, Spike Lee made his joy known. Fortunately, the pair has been friends for many years and Jackson was just as thrilled to present the award to his mate.

6. Our very own Anele Mdoda on the red carpet
If there was a prize for Best Red Carpet Performance, it would undoubtedly go to SA media darling Anele Mdoda. She looked breath-taking in her sheer and metallic Juan William Aria gown and was every inch the professional as she interviewed the likes of Glenn Close and Angela Bassett, as well as her Hollywood co-star Trevor Noah. Well done Anele!

7. Michael B Jordan’s love for his mom
The Black Panther star had the cutest date at the Oscars – his mom! He proudly walked the red carpet with mom Donna, even giving her a peck on the cheek much to the paparazzi’s delight. Other stars that got the mom-date memo were Charlize Theron, Bradley Cooper and Best Supporting Actress winner Regina King. There’s nothing quite like a mother’s love, is there?
