Just because you’re a mom doesn’t mean that you should just stay home and report for mommy duties. We encourage a little momcation and yes, you can take your baby with you.
Here are 7 tips to help you win travelling with your baby.
1. Keep the baby’s schedule as is
Try to plan your travel around your baby’s sleep, nap and feeding schedule. For instance, if it’s a long flight, try to make sure that you will be flying during your baby’s usual sleep time. Ten-to-one babies will be less cranky if they are well-fed and rested.
2. Keep food handy
Make sure that while you’re traveling you have plenty of food, snacks and liquids handy. Be sure to pack plenty. Rather have an abundance of snacks handy, just in case there are any unforeseen delays on your trip. Rather have too much, as opposed to not having enough to ensure that the baby is taken care of.
3. Book a flight with a longer layover
Hear us out. Longer layover gives you enough time to change a dirty nappy, grab some non-aeroplane food and feed the baby, if necessary. Having a longer layover means that you can also take your time getting from one gate to another, which beats being lost and running from one gate to another, with a baby o your arm.
4. Book a direct flight
On the other hand, if you have extra cash to splurge on a direct flight, that might help you and your baby have a smooth trip. Typically, the air pressure in a baby’s ears when landing could cause your baby to scream and cry on a plane. Booking a direct flight will minimise the amount of time spent in discomfort.
5. Protect baby’s ears
As previously mentioned the air pressure could cause pain and/or discomfort when landing or taking off. Sucking or chewing can help to alleviate the pressure, so make sure you have a bottle and a dummy ready or even a cracker for older babes.
6. Change nappies before boarding
Make sure your baby is dry and ready to take the flight in ease and comfort. This will help you take fewer trips on the plane and avoid inconveniencing other passengers.
Pro tip: Double bag baby’s nappy to ensure there are no leakage accidents. Apply extra nappy cream
7. Layer it on
Dress comfortably but ensure that you have a couple of easy-to-slip-off items that will help you easily change according to the change in temperature. Do the same for your baby.
