SABC2’s 7de Laan is a household name in South Africa. For the last 23 years since its inception in 2000, the show has aired on TV every night. Now, SABC2 has revealed that it will air the last ever episode of the beloved local soapie in December this year…
A press release issued by SABC2 on Monday reads as follows:
“After 23 years on air, SABC2 and Danie Odendaal Productions announce that the long-running popular soapie 7de Laan will not be recommissioned for another season when season 24 comes to an end in December.”
Danie Odendaal, creator of the show, is the brains behind the beloved characters in the local soapie. He created Oubaas, Hilda, Charmaine, Aggie, Emma, Meintjies and more, who will always be fondly remembered by viewers.
These Hillside residents reflected the rich diversity of SA and dealt with various social transformations happening in the nation. 7de Laan has grappled with social ills that South Africans face, such as gender-based violence, drug addiction, violence, kidnappings and human trafficking.

The local soapie also taught many South Africans how to speak Afrikaans, as episodes would always air along with English subtitles. Many of us have got 7de Laan to thank for our stellar Afrikaans school essays in school…

The final episode of 7de Laan will air the day after Christmas, on 26 December 2023.
