Fiddle-leaf figs have a reputation for not being the easiest houseplants to grow, but their lovely large leaves and tree form make it worth a little effort. They are adaptable houseplants and will survive less-than-ideal conditions.
Tips for your fiddle-leaf fig houseplants
Fiddle-leaf figs are native to the tropics and can grow tall in their natural habitat. They can even bear fruit, although that rarely happens outside their natural habitat.
Growing these healthy tropical plants in your home not only brings a touch of the tropics into your living room but also provides a natural piece of art. Although they are known for being temperamental, there are a few tips and tricks to help them thrive for years to come.
1. Pick the perfect spot
Fiddle-leaf figs thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. An ideal spot is near a window where the plant can receive morning sunlight. Too much direct sun can lead to leaf burn, while too little light can slow growth and cause drooping. It’s best not to move your plant around, as fiddle-leaf figs don’t like being disturbed.
2. Water them correctly
Overwatering any plant is always discouraged. Overwatering is a common pitfall for your fiddle-leaf figs. Water them when the topsoil feels dry, and do so thoroughly, allowing the excess water to drain from the pot. Using well-draining soil on your pots also helps prevent root rot.
3. Fertilize your plant
During the colder months, fiddle-leaf figs go dormant and this is when you should cut back on fertilizing. Around mid-spring to summer, during its growing season, feed your plant once a month with liquid fertilizer. Make sure to spray it on the roots and some of the leaves. This helps encourage fresh growth and healthy roots.
4. Fiddle-leaf figs prefer humidity
These plants thrive in humid environments because they are tropical plants. If your home doesn’t have much humidity, you can enhance the environment for them by placing a humidifier nearby or by regularly misting them to increase the humidity. If your plants start drooping, it could be due to a lack of humidity in the air, so using humidifiers and misting can help address this.
While these plants might be a little picky, the rewards are worth the effort. The lush, tall, vibrant plant will add life and beauty to any space. Use these tips to care for your fiddle-leaf fig and see it flourish and shine.
