With glitz and glamour in the air, the 2023 awards cycle is upon us. Hollywood A-listers glanced down the red carpet of the first major awards show of the year – The Golden Globes.
The Golden Globes is an award show that honours TV and movie stars alike. With this year’s stellar guest list, it’s bound to be a prestigious affair. However, controversy came looming…
American comedian Jerrod Carmichael hosted the 80th Golden Globes. During his opening monologue, Carmichael explained that he found himself in a crossroads when he was asked to play host. This came about after the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) declined to air the show last year due to allegations of bribery and criticism about the organisation’s lack of diversity.
Carmichael said:
“I’ll tell you why I’m here: I’m here ‘cause I’m black.”
He continued:
“This show, the Golden Globe Awards, did not air last year because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association – which I won’t say was a racist organisation…but they didn’t have a single black member on board until George Floyd died. So, do with that information what you will.”
