Ever wondered how an award winning actress and Goop’s CEO lives? Now you can, thanks to Architectural Digest’s latest addition to their Open Door series: Gwyneth Paltrow’s home. The star and her husband, Brad Falchuck, have only recently moved in after building it from the ground up. Of course, it’s rather magnificent.
The Aesthetic
Gwyneth Paltrow’s home is clearly the family’s tranquil oasis, full of natural light, views of the garden and reclaimed antique fireplaces in almost every room. In building the home, Gwyneth tells AD that her vision was for ‘a Parisian apartment set within an old European barn’. With a mix of contemporary style, modern art and traditional British influences (Gwyneth Paltrow’s home was once London for many years) the vision has definitely been achieved.
All the spaces include unique touches that accentuate its owner’s eclectic vision and appreciation of beautiful things. Like the romantic hand painted wallpaper in the dining and powder rooms, the slightly rustic brass finishes that bounce the incoming sunlight from room to room, the elegant contemporary light fittings and the handmade Portuguese tiles in the kitchen.
Stepping into the dining room, Gwyneth says, ‘I entertain a lot, I cook all the time. And I wanted it to feel both welcoming but also that you can have, like, a formal dinner party. And I think it strikes the right balance!’ It definitely sums up the aesthetic of Gwyneth Paltrow’s home: you can imagine its occupants barefoot in linen trousers as much as you can imagine them dressed up in a couture gown with a party around them. Both suit their home perfectly.
The Highlights
Unlike most homes, the flooring is constantly changing: there’s a classic black and white tile as you walk in, mostly carpet in the lounge, while the kitchen is a gorgeous wooden design. ‘I think it’s such a nice way to offer a distinct personality to a room,’ comments Gwyneth, ‘And so I’m not afraid of changing floors, as you’ll see!’ Indeed each room does take on its very own character.
The kitchen is clearly the heart of Gwyneth Paltrow’s home. It’s a bright and airy space with its stove and oven slotted into the centre island so Gwyneth can cook and socialise with kids and friends at the same time. There’s a wood-burning fireplace for winter while large glass doors open the kitchen up to the sun outside in summer. And then there’s the display of blue and white Hermès crockery – homey like your Gran’s kitchen displays, but on another level!
The lounge though is a quirky ‘showstopper’, to quote Gwyneth. As the rest of the house, there are seemingly opposing forces coming together with grace. There’s the grand marble bar across from the the large U-shaped fuzzy couch and architectural armchairs, but also a hammock dressed like a bed, hanging by the window, and cascading lights with jewels floating from the ceiling.
There’s a spa
If you’re Gwyneth Paltrow’s home, built from the ground up over six years, you are definitely going to have a spa moment! The self-confessed wellness-obsessed star took inspiration from a Parisian spa to create her very own sanctuary at home. Gwyneth admits to AD that she is in there everyday. And frankly – when you’ve got a spa tiled with handmade tiles in a soft jade green, a hot tub, steam room, and giant fluffy white robes at the ready – you’d be ridiculous not to! At least we now know how she stays so Zen…
