During the performance of her ‘Weekends with Adele‘ show on Saturday, the 35-year-old singer told her audience that she needed to take a seat due to pain she had been experiencing from her lower back down to her leg.
“I am going to sit down and rest my sciatica.” she said, going on to explain that at a recent show, she had collapsed to the floor due to a painful flare-up of sciatica.
Sciatica is a condition characterised by pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, typically originating in the lower back and extending down the buttocks and legs. It’s often caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, leading to discomfort, tingling, and sometimes numbness in the affected areas.
Adele went on to detail that her recent collapse prompted her team to pick her up off of the floor.
Adele is no stranger to pushing through the pain on stage. According to People, the singer had previously brought up her struggles with sciatica on New Years Eve in 2022, when she limped across stage, explaining that her sciatica pain causes her to waddle everywhere.
Adele has also previously chatted about her condition with the media. In her November 2021 interview with The Face, Adele revealed that she had been struggling with back pain since her teenage years, after she had slipped a disc from sneezing when she was 15.
As quoted by People, Adele said:
“I slipped my first disc when I was 15 from sneezing. I was in bed and I sneezed and my fifth one flew out. In January, I slipped my sixth one, my L6. And then where I had a C‑section, my core was useless,”.
According to Healthline, the L5 and L6 discs refer to the fifth and sixth vertebrae of the lumbar (lower) spine. Intervertebral discs, located between adjacent vertebrae, act as cushions and allow for flexibility in the spine. Problems like disc slips or herniations in these areas can lead to significant pain and discomfort, often affecting surrounding nerves and causing symptoms such Adele’s condition, sciatica.
