Anele Mdoda has opened the lid of disappointment and stress that led to her looks on the Miss SA stage last weekend.
The popular and candid media personality looked as though she ran the show whilst hosting, offering ineffable confidence as she always does.
However, on Thursday, Anele got real about how two designers let her down, and shared that she only got the yellow gown that’s given princess Belle a run for her money in the best way, just hours before the show – at four in the morning.
On her 947 breakfast show, Anele revealed that three designers had been commissioned to create four looks for the glamourous evening.
They were Juan William Aria, Scalo and George from Quiteria Goerge.
Anele’s breathtaking white feathered gown and another dazzling red and black dress were the work of Juan William Aria, who is known for marrying elegance and energy in his creations and has also created some of the most iconic garments worn by some SA’s biggest names.
Remember Liesel Laurie’s bespoke strawberry red set? Juan William Aria always understands the assignment, however, as Anele revealed later on the show, the two other designers it seems, did not.
Anele shared that George said he didn’t have the capacity to make the dress, while Scalo’s dress emerged the evening before the pageant in sizes that were too small and material Anele didn’t approve of.
“None of the extravaganza that was promised. The most hideous dress I have ever put on my body. I literally started crying, I teared up in the corner. I took it off and threw it in the bin” she expressed.

Scalo and Mr George of Quiteria George can go fly a kite as far as I’m concerned. It will be cold day in hell before I allow them to even make a napkin for me. That’s that on that. #aneleandtheclubon947 https://t.co/yX2tWuKLHS

With a two-hour show to go and armed with only two dresses out of the promised four, Anele called Juan William Aria who came to the rescue with “Plan B” – the yellow dazzler, initially intended for Miss SA 2021, but never worn, as the designer shared.
“I am so glad that it finally got to be on the stage it was designed and destined for. Anele looked sensational in her custom Juan William Aria yellow feather dress!”
Anele added on air that the designers hadn’t apologised for what happened, adding that “it wasn’t cool.”
Of Juan, Anele sang all the praises, noting that the designer ‘”can make the hell out of a frock” and that she appreciates him.
