Moviegoers around the globe assisted in breaking box office records over the weekend, as over 200 000 movie tickets were purchased to view the anticipated Barbie and Oppenheimer films on their twin release, according to reports by Reuters.

The double whammy release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer saw the fourth-biggest box office weekend in all history, and the biggest box office weekend of the pandemic era, according to reports by Variety.
Directed by Greta Gerwig, the heavily anticipated Barbie film alone set astounding records as the biggest opening of 2023, and the highest of any movie directed by a woman in history!
With original doll makers Mattel Inc behind the marketing frenzy that painted the globe pink, hundreds of product partnerships worldwide were secured ahead of Barbie’s opening weekend (cue every pink retail item you spotted in stores or online, and then some).

On its release, Barbie fetched over $337 million (R6 billion) worldwide, breaking several records in tow.

Historical drama Oppenheimer collected a remarkable $174 million (R3 billion) worldwide, as many viewers opted to see both anticipated films at the cinema on the same day, to cast their votes for the ‘best’ movie on what is now collectively being called ‘Barbenheimer’ weekend.
The verdict? Barbie wins! Nevertheless, Oppenheimer was good too, and you should book your tickets to see both!
