Take your kids to experience four stories that come to life every Saturday for the month of August at the Zeitz MOCAA. The books in the series include The Tale of Mouse and the Stories that Ran Away, First Light, Nya Nya Bulembu, and Khvum and the Crocodile Woman.
The series of four wonderfully written books by Meridian Berndt and beautifully illustrated by Jax Lamb, Meridian Berndt, Jill Joubert, and designer Mandy Wamono marks a first for the Zeitz MOCAA Centre for Art Education. The Winter Storytelling programme aims to transform the traditional notions of a museum into an interactive space for kids. Multi-award-winning performer, director and writer Carlo Daniels and fellow performers will bring The Tale of Mouse and The Stories that Ran Away to life for children, families and special guests.
Liesl Hartman, Head of Zeitz MOCAA Centre for Art Education explains, “The Tale of Mouse and The Stories that Ran Away, First Light, Nya Nya Bulembu and Khvum and the Crocodile Woman are reimaginings of four stories from different parts of Africa that tell of beginnings, creation and transformation, with each book celebrating a love and respect for the natural world. The journey of these books began with the museum’s first exhibition for children that opened in September 2019, And So the Stories Ran Away (ASSRA).”
The Winter Storytelling Programme features live readings of the stories with performers, puppeteers, and artists. Children aged 5 to 12 are invited to come to the museum in their gowns and slippers for storytime with hot chocolate and marshmallows.
In addition, the latter part of the year will feature teacher and learner workshops, which will come to a culmination point in the Children’s Summer Holiday Programme in December. The programmes will make space for children to learn through reading, and performance. Teachers will have the opportunity to develop creative tools to use in their classrooms.
The four stories will be read and performed on four Saturdays in the month of August from 4pm-6pm with each Saturday focusing on a different story:
- 3 August: First Light;
- 10 August: The Tale of Mouse and the Stories that Ran Away;
- 17 August: Nya Nya Bulembu;
- 24 August: Khvum and the Crocodile Woman.
Children enter for free and must be accompanied by a paying adult. Entrance is R250 or free with museum membership. You can book your tickets here.
