In winter, I tend to take better care of my hair due to the dry nature of the air at that time of the year. In summer, however, I tend to drop the ball thinking that the sun will somehow take care of the damage done even when I put it through the ringer a little bit more, by exposing it to the elements, sweating and swimming regularly.
If you are like me and looking for better ways to take care of your tresses this summer, here are a few protective hairstyles to limit the damage.
Braids
The best way to protect your hair is by plaiting it. Braids will help to protect your hair by reducing its exposure to the elements and by limiting the manipulation of your strands. Ensure that your braids are loose and not tight in order to prevent too much pressure on your roots and baby hairs, which can be sensitive to manipulation.
Buns
Buns are easy-to-wear, they work for all hair types – from straight to curly, short to long, and they also protect your tresses too. Buns protect your hair by keeping your ends tucked away, so if you are prone to split ends, buns are a great go-to. You can also accessorise a bun with a cute pearly headband for a more sophisticated look, or you can opt for space buns for a more playful look.
Updos
Updos are classic looks for weddings, but the beauty of an updo is that you can wear them often to protect your strands. You can opt for a sleek top knot or an intricately braided updo. If you have long hair, updos tuck away your tresses, reducing tugs, knots and friction, which can often lead to split ends and breakage.
Pro-tip: Nighttime coverage
We sometimes overlook the damage done in our sleep. As a result of the warmer nights, we sometimes don’t care to cover our heads before bed in summer. This is the first mistake, as our hair may be prone to knots and breakage due to the friction of our hair and pillowcases. Make sure you cover your hair with a satin or silk bonnet or scarf to ensure protection throughout the night.
