Today, 22 April is Earth Day. The theme for 2024’s Earth Day is Planet vs Plastics which advocates for the phasing out of single-use plastics. The aim is to reduce the production of plastics by 60% in 2040.
Although we can’t go back in time and change some of the not-so-earth-friendly decisions we’ve made in the past, another way to right some of the wrongs in terms of plastic is to upcycle them to ensure that they don’t end up in landfills or the ocean.
WATCH:
Create a self-watering water bottle
Cut a plastic bottle in half. Place the top part of the bottle upside down into the bottom of the bottle. Fill the bottom section with some water. Thread a piece of cotton through the top part and fill it with soil or sand. Make sure the thread is covered in water. You are now ready to insert your plant. The thread will draw moisture up to the soil and make sure your plant stays watered.

Create a bird-feeder
Use a plastic bottle and you can use used or unused chopsticks or plastic spoons to serve as feeders. Poke holes throughout the bottle to fit the handle of the spoons with the spoon part exposed for the birds to use as feeders. You can also use old wooden spoons. Thread some wire or the metal part of an old hanger through the cap and hang it from a tree.
Hide your cords and cables
Use lotion bottles that are big enough to create a charging station that hides your cables. Big aqueous cream tubs are ideal, but smaller lotion bottles can also be cut in half and decorated. You can add a piece of thread or wool at the top to hang over the plug so that your phone can stay secure on the plug.
Another way to do your bit is to sign the Global Plastics Treaty.
