Since I’ve been hitting the gym more regularly these days, I’ve been looking at ways to optimise my workouts and based on all my research, protein seems to be the answer for not only my newfound obsession but so many other health concerns too.
Here are 7 reasons why it might be time to increase your protein intake:
Muscle growth
If like me, you’re trying to build a little bit of muscle and finally say hello to some Michelle Obama arms, protein is key. Protein is essential for building and repairing muscle tissue, making it crucial for anyone engaged in physical activity or strength training.
Weight management
Protein is key for any weight loss plan. Since it has a higher thermic effect on the body compared to carbohydrates and fats, meaning your body burns more calories just by digesting protein, which can aid in weight management and weight loss efforts.
Another reason why protein helps you lose weight is because protein-rich foods help you feel full and satisfied, which can prevent overeating and binge eating, and it can promote better appetite control.
Bone health
Protein is a key component of bone tissue, and for those with a family history of osteoporosis, added protein is a great preventative measure as it can help you maintain bone density and reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis later down the line.
Hormone regulation
Proteins play a role in hormone production and regulation. High-quality protein can potentially reduce your symptoms of menopause, which can have a significant impact on various bodily functions, including your metabolism and your mood.
Immune function
Many immune system components, such as antibodies, are made up of proteins. With winter on the horizon, now is a good time to start increasing your protein consumption, in order to build a strong immune system for the incoming winter months.
Hair, skin, and nail health
Now, who doesn’t want a luscious mane, glowing skin and strong nails? Proteins are vital for the growth and maintenance of healthy hair, skin, and nails.
Blood sugar regulation
Including protein in your meals can help stabilize blood sugar levels and prevent spikes and crashes, which is especially beneficial for individuals with diabetes, insulin resistance or even for those who may be pre-diabetic.
