Have you ever wondered how much that 12-step skincare routine is costing you per year, in money and in time?
Well, a recent local survey reveals how much the average South African woman spends on cosmetics per annum, and another global survey indicates how much time women spend ‘primping’ every day. The results may surprise you…
How much the average SA woman spends on cosmetics
According to the survey, the average SA woman spends R5 468 annually just on cosmetics, while male counterparts spend about half of that, adding up to about R2 750.
The survey also demonstrates that the average woman uses around 12 beauty products in her routine every day, opting for skincare that contains effective active ingredients such as retinol, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide to achieve flawless skin.

To add, the beauty and personal care industry in Africa has climbed with an annual growth rate of 6.6% from 2018 to 2022, with 36% of Africa’s cosmetic industry growth stemming from SA, according to Intergest. However, the growing population, urbanisation and availability of affordable skincare in SA are all contributors toward this steady climb, according to Mordor Intelligence.
How much time women spend on ‘primping’ every day
Furthermore, a study published in the Evolution and Human Behavior journal analyses data from a group of 93 158 individuals aged 18 to over 90 across 93 countries, and reveals that 99% of its participants spend at least ten minutes a day on behaviours that better their physical appearance, but that’s the minimum…
According to the researchers, data analysed from participating females shows that women spend an average of almost four hours a day spent on primping, while men spend 3.6 hours a day on average. However, there were some disparities according to age.
The study showed that women who are middle-aged women (30s, 40s and 50s) spend the least time on primping. Contrasts indicate that women who are around 18 years of age would spend around an hour more per day on their appearance than women aged 44. Whereas women aged 60 spend half an hour less than women aged 44.
Age isn’t the only determining factor, though. Social media’s influence aids in the spike of fully fleshed out skincare routines and the demand for cosmetic products that go viral online. Women aged 18-25 are generally more active on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, where they are influenced to spend more (time and money) on cosmetics and personal care.
