As I’m in the process of purchasing a new bed, I’ve found the bed lingo to be quite confusing. From firm to medium to plush, to sizing to reversible and so much more, the world of beds required me to do some thorough research before I could actually hit “checkout”.
So since I’ve already done the work, here’s what I’ve learned on my journey, with the help of insights from the founder of Sloom, Rudo Kemp.
“We often find that consumers don’t want to spend so much money on a mattress, but the reality is, we spend more on technology – which actually inhibits us from having a good night’s rest. We need to be more mindful about supporting our sleep patterns with high-quality products such as a memory foam mattress which you will have for 10 years. It is the highest level of self-care you can do for yourself… and your family,” says Rudo.
Mattress firmness levels
Memory Foam Mattress
Memory foam moulds to your body in response to pressure, evenly distributing body weight, allowing all bodies to be comfortable and taken care of when they are having some rest. Memory foam also offers incomparable durability and longevity.
Soft Mattress
Soft mattresses are great for couples as they will isolate movement, so if you have a partner who moves a lot or one who has to use the bathroom frequently in the middle of the night, you can continue to enjoy your rest. Soft mattresses are also great as they allow you to sink in the bed and if you are sleeping alone, it can give you a hugging sensation. It’s also great for anyone who suffers from joint pain.
Medium Mattress
Medium mattresses offer balance and support. If you change sleeping positions throughout the night, as opposed to sticking with one, a medium mattress is ideal. They will support you if you’re laying on your side, and align your spine if you are on your back or if you are laying flat on your stomach.
Firm Mattress
Quality firm mattresses have a reputation for lasting longer and can help with spinal alignment. If you are a warm sleeper, firm mattresses might be better for you as they sleep cooler. If you sleep on your stomach, firm mattresses are ideal for you, whereas if you are a side sleeper a firm mattress doesn’t offer the proper contouring or pressure relief.
Natural Fabrics
Cotton is a natural fabric that allows for breathability and better temperature regulation, providing a cooler night’s rest. “Look for cotton products that comply with the BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) which means the cotton is responsibly sourced; supporting communities while protecting and restoring the environment,” says Kemp.
