The most coveted look to master is the natural makeup look. Especially as we lean in to the era that cheers on barefaced beauty. However the simplicity of the look can be difficult to get right. Our guiding principles will allow you to take on this versatile look with confidence and customise each step to enhance your own unique face shape, skin tone and features.
Skin
As we have learnt from lelive’s Nash Mariah, it all starts with the skin! Your skin provides the foundation to the rest of your look. With the natural makeup look, the key is to enhance, not cover, your skin. You want it to look and act like a better version of itself. A light coverage foundation, tinted moisturiser or good concealer is essential for creating a smooth, even and natural base.

Dampening your foundation brush, concealer brush or blender will allow you to apply and buff out your product with more ease, to get a more natural, sheer finish.
TIP: Don’t skip the primer! You want your face to be well-prepared and smooth for the day.
Eyes
A little colour rounds-off every natural makeup look. A gentle neutral shade on your eyelids gives your face an overall warmth and brightness. For bright doe eyes, opt for a rich peach or touch of mauve. The most important thing is to blend it very well. Place a tiny drop of moisturiser on to your fingertip and blend – this works like a charm at diffusing and tapering off the pigment.
If you are going to apply eyeliner, ditch the black in favour of soft brown, purple, blue and sunset hues. Gel liners and blendable formulas are key to subtlety and very lightly smudging the lines. This wakes your eyes up and enhances your eye colour.
When it comes to the lashes, a trusty lash curler will help with that open-eyed freshness. Apply mascara to your top lashes only. Scrape the brush to reduce the amount of product and use a spoolie or your fingers to lift the excess for a more even and lighter layer. And don’t forget to lightly brush through your brows with a clear or pigmented brow gel.
TIP: We recommend creamier formulas in all products. Compared to powders, creamy formulas make achieving seamless application much easier.
Cheeks
We’re reaching for the colour again. A dab of colour to the cheeks gives your face structure and completes a natural makeup look. Sweep a cream blusher from the corner of your mouth to your hairline. Stick to shimmer- and glitter-free blushers in a tone that mimics your natural blush. This ensures you’re creating a truly natural makeup look rather than a strong cheek. Subtlety is the aim here!
TIP: While your blusher should not be glittery, a good highlighter is essential. And by this we mean a gentle glowing formula that will easily melt into the tops of your cheeks. You might want to add a touch to the tip of your nose and cupid’s bow too.
Lips
Low-sheen, muted tones closely matching your natural lip colour is first prize. Line your lips with a matching shade and lightly diffuse it to soften the line and create a low-drama pout. Much the same as your eyeliner, it will frame your mouth without creating a strong, over-defined look. Using a small, damp brush will blend the colour without building it up too much keeping it in line with the fresh and subtle style of a natural makeup look.
TIP: Start by priming your lips with a moisturising balm and do the same to seal and diffuse the pigment. Your fingers will melt the balm and pigment into one evenly diffused and low-maintenance layer.
That’s really it! Celebrate your natural makeup look and the beautiful face it enhances.
