Winter has cast its icy spell bringing with it a magical snowfall not seen in over a decade in parts of SA, with regions such as Johannesburg seeing snow for the first time in 11 years.

Experiencing a real-life winter wonderland is an exciting occasion for everyone, four-legged family included. We’re outside playing in the snow, making tiny South African snowmen, and filming our dogs dashing about in the white blanket that now coats our lawns.
It’s all fun and games, but it’s important to take extra care of your pet’s needs during the cold, and especially when it’s snowing! To help you keep the four-leggeds happy, we’re sharing some practical tips on how to keep your pets warm when it’s snowing outside.
Let’s get into it!
Bundle your babies up
Just like we layer up with warm clothing during cold weather, our pets can benefit from some extra layers too.
Consider buying a well-fitted, cozy sweater or jacket designed specifically for your pet’s breed and size. This will give your faithful furry friend an additional layer of insulation and help them retain body heat while frolicking in the snow. If you’re on a budget, there are great tutorials on how to make jackets for your pets using old hoodies and bits of fabric available online.
Create a cozy space indoors
It should go without saying, but all pets should be brought indoors during the snow. This especially applies to South African pets who aren’t accustomed to colder weather or snow.
It’s crucial to offer your fur babies a warm shelter to retreat to when they’ve had enough outdoor playtime. Create a comfortable space indoors for them with a cozy bed, blankets, and perhaps even a heated pet mat. Ensure that the area is draft-free and away from cold windows or doors. Snuggle up with them for extra shared heat!
Watch the paws
As much fun as they’re having trotting about on the icy snow outside, snow may harmful to your pet’s paws after sustained periods.
Just as we can experience discomfort, frostbite, or even injury during cold weather, so can our pets. Protect their paws by applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly to their paws before heading out. This is like slugging for your pets! You can alternatively try pet booties, but most pets won’t be comfortable moving about in these at first.

After your adventure in the snow, wipe their paws with a warm damp cloth to remove any snow or ice.
Hydration is key, even in the cold
While it may seem counterintuitive, pets can become dehydrated in the cold weather, too. Ensure they have access to fresh water at all times. If you notice your pet is reluctant to drink the cold water, try offering them warm water or slightly heating their water bowl.
Keep it indoors if it’s wild outside
If the weather becomes too severe or your pet seems uncomfortable outside, engage them in stimulating indoor activities. Interactive toys, treat puzzles, and gentle play sessions can keep their minds and bodies active while staying warm and cozy indoors.

Comfort food
Just like us, pets burn more calories to maintain body heat in colder weather. Consult your veterinarian to determine if your pet’s diet needs any adjustments during this time. They may suggest increasing the portion size or recommending specific types of food that provide additional energy to keep your pet warm and healthy.
A good groom doesn’t hurt
Maintaining a well-groomed coat is important for your pet’s insulation during winter. Regular brushing removes dead hair and mats, allowing the natural oils to circulate, providing better insulation against the cold. However, avoid excessive bathing during colder months, as it can strip away essential oils and dry out their skin.
So, dress them up, create a snug shelter, protect their paws, and remember to provide ample love and care. Enjoy winter wonderland!
