Local musician Jesse Clegg recently marked the birthday of his late partner, Dani Cooperman, with a heartfelt message less than a year after her passing.
Cooperman lost her battle to colon cancer in September 2022. Clegg has been navigating his role as a single father to the couple’s daughter, Mylah.
Clegg took to social media on Monday to pay a heartfelt tribute to Cooperman.
Alongside a family photograph featuring the trio, Clegg captioned the post with touching words:
“Happy birthday my beautiful Dani. I see your magic in our baby every day. You would be so proud of her. You are missed and loved dearly and your spirit will always shine through our incredible little girl. Rest in peace.”

In her final moments, Cooperman exhibited remarkable courage and grace during her battle with cancer, as acknowledged by Clegg.
At the time of her passing, he expressed, “Her soul has moved on to its next great adventure and she is now at peace.”
Jesse fondly remembered Cooperman as not only the love of his life but also an exceptional mother to their daughter, Mylah, adding that her spirit lives on through their child.

The theme of loss is not unfamiliar to Clegg and his family.
In 2020, they undertook a poignant journey to KwaZulu-Natal, commemorating the passing of his father, Johnny Clegg, a renowned musician.
The son joined a significant Zulu ritual at the homestead of Johnny Clegg’s musical partner, Sipho Mchunu, as a tribute to Johnny’s deep connection to the place. Jesse Clegg expressed the sentiment, “My dad was deeply connected to this place, and to be able to commemorate and honour him here, surrounded by love and family, was very special.”
Johnny Clegg’s own battle with pancreatic cancer concluded in July 2019. He left behind a lasting musical legacy, most notably through his participation in the groundbreaking racially integrated band Juluka, which defied apartheid-era norms in South Africa.
