If you’re a naturalista like me, you might be a stickler for the types of products you choose to put on your crown, spending invaluable time scanning through the ingredients on the packaging, and doing your utmost best to ensure that you’re getting a high-quality product at the best price.
Since the demise of chemically-straightened hair, so many brands and product ranges have come onto the market, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish the good from the bad.
Many international brands have introduced their own formulas for natural hair and have gone onto shelves in South Africa, but our hair textures may be different to other regions in the world. We also have to take into consideration the climate and elements like the sun and wind in South Africa and how that may impact the health of our hair.
Here are some of our favourite local hair care products for natural hair.
Marley Grey
Marley Grey hair care is an all-encompassing organic hair care brand that caters to the needs of the modern-day naturalista, without excluding chemically-treated mamas. Marley Grey also caters to men with their Manlyman beard care range and durag collection. Founder, Marion Hermans started her brand by sewing and selling satin sleep caps to protect her client’s hair at night. Today, Marley Grey has expanded, offering personalised hair care consultations, hair accessories like satin-lined snoods, doeks, microfibre towels, satin scrunchies and so much more.

You can purchase their products at the Marley Grey online store.
My Natural Hair
My Natural Hair is a personal favourite as its formulas are made with rich oils and butters, that are ideal for hydrating the strands.
Their motto is that a woman’s hair is her crowning glory, and as people have colour have been pressured into straightening their hair to the point of damage. My Natural Hair aims to instil a sense of pride in women’s natural hair, by offering products that cater to the needs of curly girls.
You can purchase their products at the My Natural Hair online store, at Clicks, Checkers, Shoprite and Takealot.
Curl Chemistry
Curl Chemistry was born back in 2016 when founder Liesl Smerdon was looking for natural products that were moisturizing. Since she couldn’t find any, she decided to create her own magic formula and the Curl Chemistry Curl Activating Cream was born. The product is made with moisturizing oils such as coconut oil, shea butter, castor oil and avocado oil. These oils are known to contribute to healthy hair.
Coupled with the fact that Curl Chemistry products are silicone-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free and vegan. Each range targets certain hair concerns, but above all the Curl Chemistry brand aims to tame frizz, stimulate hair growth and keep hair moisturized.
