Michelle and Barack Obama have just celebrated 31 years of marriage together!
The couple took to Instagram on Tuesday, celebrating over three decades of memories together. Michelle shared a snap of herself and Barack sporting big smiles, with the city and ocean lining the horizon in the background. The caption reads:
“31 years, and a lifetime to go. I love going through life with you by my side, @BarackObama. Happy anniversary, honey!”
Barack also took to Instagram to celebrate the big milestone, posting another snap where they’re all smiles, with the caption:
“Happy anniversary, sweetheart!@MichelleObama, you’re brilliant, kind, funny, and beautiful—and I’m lucky to call you mine.”

Michelle and Barack Obama met in the late 1980s while they were both working at the Sidley Austin LLP law firm in Chicago. Michelle Robinson, who later became Michelle Obama, was assigned to be Barack Obama’s mentor when he joined the firm as a summer associate.
Their first interactions were professional – Michelle was responsible for overseeing Barack’s work and helping him acclimate to the firm. However, they quickly developed a friendship, and their professional relationship evolved into a romantic one.

The couple married on October 3, 1992 and in 1998, Michelle and Barack Obama welcomed their first daughter, Malia Ann. Three years later in 2001, Natasha Marian – commonly known as Sasha – was born.

Barack Obama went on to become the 44th President of the United States, and Michelle Obama became the First Lady.
