It’s been nine years since the tragic murder of Reeva Steenkamp shocked South Africans and the world.
Steenkamp was an acclaimed woman, dominating both her fields of expertise as a paralegal and model. However, Valentine’s Day in 2013, behind a bathroom door, Reeva saw the end of her life after being shot by her boyfriend Oscar Pistorius in a round of four firings.
Pistorius’s trial was followed around the world. It came as a terrible shock to those who had seen the former professional sprinter as an inspiration, and a season of mourning and anger arose from South Africans everywhere. A year later, Pistorius was found guilty, and his argument that he suspected a burglar ,dismissed.
Steenkamp’s murder largely set the tone for greater movements to come, including the #AmINext activism that centred around gender-based violence in our country, spurred by the murder of Uyinene Mrwetyana.
Now, Reeva Steenkamp’s story will be retold and revisited during a month which holds dual meaning as both her birth month and Women’s Month.
My Name is Reeva is premised to be an “emotive and sensitively told three-part documentary series based on the life of Reeva and the events which led to her shocking death on Valentine’s Day in 2013,” as M-Net confers.
The documentary has received the Steenkamp family’s blessing as it explores interviews with her parents, close friends and family.
M-Net adds that her parents, Barry and June Steenkamp, say: “We fully endorse Warren and his team to bring out the truth in this documentary and show the world who Reeva really was.”
Part one of the true-crime style documentary is set to air on Monday, 25 August at 8:30pm on M-Net.
