Allergies and the Cape Town wind go hand-in-hand. It’s unfortunate, but on the days when I’m exposed to some wind, either I lose my voice or my eyes are swollen, puffy and red. For this reason, I looked into some natural remedies to reduce puffiness and red eyes on those days.
Here are the top recommended natural ways to reduce puffiness and red eyes:
Cucumber slices
This is a common practice, even for people who don’t suffer from allergies, but perhaps on a day when you wake up with tired eyes. Cucumber slices are known for their hydrating properties. Simply place cool cucumber slices over your closed eyelids for about 10-15 minutes. Cucumbers have a cooling effect and can help reduce puffiness.
Pro-tip: I usually keep two slices of cucumber in the freezer. On days when I wake up and I need a cooling boost on my eyes, they are on-hand immediately.
Tea bags
A family favourite in our household. Soak green tea, chamomile or rooibos tea bags in water, then place them over your closed eyes for 10-15 minutes. The tannins in tea can help constrict blood vessels and reduce inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties of tea bags may reduce irritation and inflammation. Tea bags can be used as a warm or cold compress. Cold compresses help to reduce dark circles, shrink bags, and soothe red eyes. A warm compress will reduce blepharitis, which is inflammation of the eyelids due to bacteria.
Aloe vera
Aloe vera is great for the skin and it is a must-have in my cosmetic cupboard, as it has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce puffiness and redness. Apply chilled aloe vera gel to the area around your eyes to soothe irritated eyes.
Potato slices
This one came as a shock to me, but potatoes serve a similar purpose to cucumber slices. Chilled potato slices can help reduce puffiness and soothe redness. Place them over your closed eyelids for about 10-15 minutes.
Reduce salt intake
High salt intake can cause fluid retention, leading to puffiness around the eyes. Try to reduce your salt intake and opt for fresh, whole foods instead of processed ones.
Eye massage
I love a little DIY lymphatic drainage massage as part of my self-care routine. Gently massage the area around your eyes with your fingertips to stimulate blood circulation and reduce puffiness.
Cool compress with rose water
Soak a cotton pad in chilled rose water and place it over your closed eyelids for a few minutes. Rose water has soothing properties that can help reduce redness and puffiness.
Hydration
Remember to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, as dehydration can contribute to puffiness and redness around the eyes.
If you experience persistent or severe eye puffiness and redness and it’s not due to allergies or tiredness, perhaps it’s time to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
