The actress (and former cover star of Woman&Home), known for her roles in films like Fences and The Woman King, took to Instagram to share glimpses of her birthday bash on South African soil with her followers.
Davis expressed her gratitude for another year of life filled with revelations and joy to losses and triumphs, sharing thanks for all the wishes received on her birthday trip to Cape Town.
Viola used the Xhosa greeting “enkosi” (translating to ‘thank you’) to extend her gratitude to all who celebrated with her. The caption reads:
“Another year…full of revelations, joy, loss, triumphs….and another year to wake up and be grateful for it all! Thank you 58!! Thank you all for the birthday love. Enkosi!!!!”

Celebrations unfolded at The Waterfront’s One & Only luxury resort, where Davis fell privy to an array of stunning sweets and cakes. In one shot, a cookie-sized reproduction of Africa lands on a serving board with a red velvet cupcake and a sweet message that reads “Viola you are here”, written in condensed milk…cute!
Davis’ connection to South Africa goes beyond her recent birthday celebration on August 11.
In 2021, the production of The Woman King – that Davis not only produced but played lead actress in – was filmed in SA. Viola worked alongside South African actors Thuso Mbedu and Masali Baduza during the film.
In chatting to Entertainment Tonight about her journey working on The Woman King on South African grounds, Viola said:
“Well, I felt it was worth it when I got on to the soil In South Africa in that red dirt… Then, when you see your dream and you see all your hard work come to fruition, and then to present it to the world.”
We’re thrilled Viola chose to spend her birthday at our stomping grounds, and hope to welcome her back soon!
