The Joy’s Duzie Hlophe told News24 that Doja Cat’s team reached out to the group’s management ahead of the star’s headliner performance.
Hlophe added that when the group met Amala, she said that she had been following them on social media for years, and was looking for an opportunity to work together.
In an Instagram post reflecting on their performance at Coachella, The Joy wrote:
“It’s been so hard to keep this a secret !! Tonight we performed with the amazing @dojacat on @coachella ‘s main stage in front of 100 000 people ! Thank you Amala, or rather Zandile 😋”
Doja Cat, an American singer and rapper, has South African roots. Her father, Dumisani Dlamini, a South African actor, met Amala’s mother, Elizabeth Sawyer, in New York when he was performing Sarafina! on Broadway.
Amala has described her father as an “incredible dancer and a great actor,” but has previously said that she isn’t well acquainted with him.
