As the days get longer and the temperatures rise, our skincare routines need to adapt to the changing seasons. “Spring brings new challenges and opportunities for maintaining healthy, radiant skin. However, it’s essential to separate skincare fact from fiction and debunk some common spring skincare myths,” explains Bodidoc brand manager, Miso Mchunu.
Mchunu explores these myths and uncovers the truth behind them, below:
- Heavy creams are best for spring skin
Many people believe that using a heavy cream is the solution to combatting dry skin during the transition from winter to spring. While keeping your skin well-hydrated is essential, using a thick, very rich cream may not be the best approach.
Debunked: Lighter, hydrating lotions are often more effective during spring. Heavy creams can clog pores and lead to breakouts in warmer weather. Opt for one that offers adequate hydration without feeling greasy on the skin, such as Bodidoc’s Tissue Oil Lotion, with Avocado Oil, Vitamin E, and Evening Primrose Oil. It will moisturise the skin and help to reduce stretch marks and uneven skin tone.
- Spring showers hydrate your skin
Some people think that living in a part of the country that experiences increased humidity and spring rains means that this will naturally hydrate their skin, eliminating the need for moisturisers.
Debunked: While higher humidity levels can help maintain skin moisture to some extent, they may not be sufficient to keep your skin adequately hydrated. Continue to apply your lotion to lock in moisture and prevent dryness.
- The harder you scrub, the better
Scrubbing the skin hard gives the illusion that the skin feels cleaner after. While many may think that cleansing your skin harder is better, in reality, it’s the opposite. Too much scrubbing could damage the skin.
Debunked: Essential skincare does not need to be aggressive for it to work. Being easy on the skin is preferable to scrubbing.
- Shower more often
The cleaner your skin the better, right? Well, not necessarily. While we’re not suggesting you let your personal hygiene standards slide, you might want to reconsider that third – or even second – daily shower.
Debunked: To keep the skin’s protective barrier intact, it’s best to bathe only once or twice a day to avoid washing away natural – and necessary – oils. If you have dry or sensitive skin sticking to one bath or shower a day will help prevent itching and irritation.
- You don’t need to take as much care with your body’s skin
While some areas are hardier than facial skin, other areas – namely the skin on your neck and chest and backs of the hands – are similarly thin and quick to show signs of ageing.
Debunked: Make sure you keep these areas hydrated and protected, and be gentle when washing, scrubbing, and drying your skin – from top to toe.
By debunking these spring skincare myths, you’ll be better equipped to face the new season with confidence and a radiant complexion.
